In the wake of Saturday's awful terrorist attack, I'm finding the politics of the aftermath quite difficult to handle. I'd like to first say that this incident was most definitely a terrorist attack perpetrated by white-nationalist neo-Nazis, and our President's inability to call it what it is was disgusting and telling of who he has aligned himself with. And his "clarification" today did nothing. His time for calling out the terrorists had passed. Today was just damage control - read clearly from a teleprompter to save what little face he has left.
My issue is with how this awful and heartbreaking attack is being handled online. Well-meaning people are researching the photos of the march, and are calling out members by name. In the internet world, it's known as doxxing. While I feel anyone who aligns themselves with the white power movement is morally bankrupt, I stop short of finding doxxing a good form of retaliation, because then, where does it end? We're horrified when good people like Felicia Day are doxxed online by misogynists who think she's "ruining gaming." But these same people that were horrified by this incident, are some of the ones that are releasing personal information of the white-power marchers.
I just feel that by releasing this information online, they're stooping to the same level of these hateful people. These white power marchers deserve the backlash that is coming to them. They're hateful, and believe in an ideal system that is morally reprehensible and unforgivable. But rising up and being the better people in the face of their hate, may be the more logical path to peace. I'm not naive enough to think that love is the only answer to this horrifying ordeal, but a little love, patience and restraint never hurt.

I'm Confused
A few weeks ago, the Trump administration withdrew their "healthcare bill" from congress because they knew they wouldn't have the votes. Today, they somehow had enough votes to pass the "bill" to debate. How does that happen? Also, the "bill" hasn't been seen by anyone. What exactly did they vote on then? If Congress can just vote on things, with no data, then I suggest we vote that I win the lottery. If it's this easy to possibly pass a bill that will revoke care from millions of people, then winning the lottery should be a walk in the park for these lawmakers.
What's even more puzzling is that John McCain, who was being lauded as an American Hero after he left treatment for brain cancer, to make his way to Washington for the session, voted in favor of this truly mean (in the words of the President) "bill." McCain is being treated for cancer. How does he deem himself worthy of this treatment, when he won't extend access to this level of care to a good portion of the country? He had no office to win, and nothing to lose. And yet, he completely disregarded the sentiments of his constituents to pander to the GOP. It's disgusting.
This current administration, and the GOP lawmakers are willing to risk the lives of millions to pass their own agenda, because the previous bill was passed by a President on the other side of the aisle. Where is the compassion for their constituents? Where is the loyalty to their country? And most of all where is the common sense of the government?

The Planet Needs our Help
In a list of causes I'm passionate about, like cancer research, women's issues, the arts, child hunger, AIDS awareness, I will admit that the environment is sadly low on the list. However, I completely understand how important it is. And I know that our President's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement today is a ridiculously ignorant and short-sighted decision.
Climate change is the single biggest threat that the world is facing in the 21st century. The world is getting hotter and more polluted and we need scientists to help us reverse these terrible trends. However, this administration doesn't "believe" in Science. How does one not believe in Science? Did they think their teachers were spouting out lies for the 18 years they were in science class? Do they think that the 85 degree days that sometimes happen in the middle of winter are just a gift from god and nothing else? There are scientific and irrefutable facts that this is happening.
And these are the facts they're arguing. Talk about backing the wrong horse. Of course, there's a whole lot more to lose in this particular race. Instead of losing a few dollars (something Donald Trump should be used to), our children and children's children will pay the consequences of a destroyed environment, which is something apparently the US, and the citizens of Syria and Nicaragua can live with...

Logically Speaking...
I have a hard time arguing my feelings because I find it difficult to speak logically when people are being awful. But I'm going to try to in this case, because either I'm really not understanding something or our President is an idiot. I've never been one to say that I know everything, but I'm leaning pretty sharply on the latter.
Now I know our government over the last few months has made multiple ill-advised, inappropriate and rash decisions on everything from appointees to passing bills. This news cycle has had its fill of these calls. Basically, the only business that's booming right now are the late night hosts that are being paid to make jokes about this administration. And thank goodness for them, because if we weren't laughing, we'd definitely be crying.
I've disagreed with every single thing that's ever come out of President Trump's mouth. I personally think he's a disgrace to humanity and a laughing-stock. Yet, I understand what he thinks he's doing most of the time. He hardly ever succeeds at it, but you can at least try to see the start of a thought - before it ultimately loses its thread from his brain to his mouth. But today, I'm having a hard time understanding any sort of logic behind firing FBI Director Comey. What does this gain?
By firing him, Trump has put himself on Comey's bad side. And based on tons of intel, Comey seems to know a lot about what's been going on in the White House. So, exactly why would President Trump give Director Comey a reason to spout off all of his information to a possible special prosecutor or a senate committee? Wouldn't it be better to let Comey keep his job and keep him happy? I'm just not understanding the reasoning.
But, in today's world, I'm getting pretty used to that...

Viva Le France!
Somehow, France managed to do what England and the US couldn't - they managed to elect the saner of the 2 candidates they had to choose from. They didn't elect a laughing stock or someone who had no business being in power. Since I visited Paris, I've been less than thrilled with the country, however after the resounding victor of Macron, I have a growing respect for the country and the French people. Yay France!
What I was most surprised to learn, aside from who won, was that they do their voting on a Sunday instead of the Tuesday elections we have here. How much more civilized is that? No one's working so they have the time and energy to go vote. Here, it's such a pain to get to the polling places either before or after work, which is why our turnout is often so low. I read a statistic today that said that this year's French election turnout was "bad" for them, however it's higher than the US election turnout for the last 20 years. That's pretty crazy!
So I suppose, all of this is to say, maybe if we can switch our voting over to Sundays, we'll never again have to deal with a moronic administration like we have now? Maybe? A girl could hope anyway...

The Not So Friendly Skies
Each day I read the news and think that it can't get any stranger, and then of course, it does. Usually it has everything to do with the current president and his administration, however today's weird news story has absolutely nothing to do with him. Although, he'll probably find himself in the middle of this mess eventually - he usually does.
Last evening, for some inexplicable reason, the people at United Airlines thought it was a great PR move to forceably drag a doctor off one of their airplanes. A doctor that had the misfortune of being chosen to "volunteer" to get moved to a later flight. A doctor whose excuse for not being able to take a later flight was that he needed to be at the hospital in the morning to see patients. As a good friend states - I have questions.
For instance, how in the world did this situation escalate so violently and so quickly? The doctor was minding his own business and by all accounts was rationally explaining why he couldn't change flights. At that point, why didn't the United flight crew move on and choose another passenger to volunteer? The whole thing would have been over, and the economy of the entire company may not be in danger right now.
Or, why in fact was the plane booked over capacity anyway? These issues are usually handled at the gate not once passengers are on the plane. Why was a number that was greater than the number of seats they had allowed on the plane in the first place? And more to the point, why in the world was the plane sold over capacity in the first place? Is this common place and if it is, how is this good for business?
And lastly, can you imagine being on that plane with a child or even just with friends and witnessing this awful scene first hand? How does one fly after that? Or how does one decide to stay on that particular plane after something like that?
The entire situation is just scary and most definitely odd. Never have I worried about something like this happening on any airplane that I was on - crashes, engine issues, even just being next to a screaming baby - but never being forceably taken from a plane. But you can guarantee I will be thinking of it the next time I'm on a plane, and I'm sure loads of others will too. Way to go United - you really made the friendly skies a lot less friendlier...

Save the NEA!
Since this morning, I've been thinking about the arts a lot and the national endowment of the arts. You can probably guess why. Because our ridiculously hard headed commander in chief has decided that the NEA is unworthy of money in his current budget - but weekend trips to Mar a Lago that cost $3 million a pop are worthy of this funding. Funny how that works. I'd rather not pay my taxes and use that money to go to London each month but it seems that's illegal for me...
Anyway, since hearing this news about the NEA budget, all I've been thinking about is one particular Toby Ziegler rant from West Wing. It's fairly perfect! Toby gets what PBS stands for in the lives of kids. Not to mention what it means to adults. PBS is completely free entertainment for kids and adults alike. Why would you cut something that has taught most of the population how to count and spell and create?
On top of PBS, the NEA does so much more than that. It's providing an outlet for artists and creators to make beautiful things. How is that not important in today's world where the state of things is less than beautiful? I'm sure President Trump's precious hotels and residences wouldn't be quite as "gorgeous" (I'm putting that in quotes, because his affinity for gold things is definitely not in my taste...) without designers, and decorators. In other words, artists.
Sometimes, the arts is all kids and adults have as an outlet. In turn, these people sharing their art with the world is their way of giving back, which makes the world a richer and more creative place. Who in their right mind would want to live in a less imaginative world?
I just don't understand. I get needing to cut the budget. It's a necessary evil. But when our very own president isn't willing to cut down his spending on things he finds beautiful, why should we have to?

Things That Make Me Go Hmmm...
It's only Monday. I should not already be perplexed my as many things as I am. And yet, here we are...
~ Trump tweeting that President Obama wire-tapped Trump Tower. Either Trump actually thinks that all that's needed to get a wire tap is a Presidential signature, or he's lying to take our attention from something else. Neither is good. In one instance, he's terribly unintelligent and in the other he's terribly evil. I'm going to say I think they're both true...
~ The movie Get Out is being touted as the best movie of the year so far, and the best horror movie ever made. I have an general idea of what it's about, but I'm completely confused as to the main idea. However, it's a horror movie so I'm probably not going to be seeing it ever. What I really need is for someone I know to watch it for me, and either tell me what it's about or tell me it's not going to scare me so I can watch it.
~ Why, why, why would Ben Carson say that Africans brought to America on slave ships were "immigrants?" I mean, I sort of get slipping up in conversation on trivial matters, but when you're giving a speech about race relations - that's not a trivial matter. Also, it's completely un-true.
~ Who would be perfect to play Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins in the newly announced My Fair Lady? My current thoughts are Phillipa Soo and Steven Pasquale. Though, I'm also sort of leaning towards Kara Lindsay and Josh Groban.
~ Will the Baltimore Ravens pick up Torrey Smith again since he was dropped by the 49ers today? I vote yes!
~ And lastly, and most importantly - how can the Republicans watch the footage of the Syrian refugees walking miles to escape the militants in their country and still sign a ban on giving these poor souls a better place to live? It's heartless.

Case of the Century
I was about 11 when the OJ Simpson trial happened. I knew pretty much nothing of it at the time. I had much better things to watch on television than a trial where I understood nothing of what was happening. Of course, that didn't stop me from having an opinion on the outcome - like pretty much every other person on earth at that time. I do remember it being a media frenzy. I remember grownups talking about it 24/7 and I remember it being on the cover of every single magazine at the grocery story.
When it finally ended, I remember lots of people being angry about the outcome. Pretty much every adult in my life at the time thought he was guilty, so I thought he was guilty. And when he was found not-guilty I just assumed that was something that happened sometimes, and went about my business. Over the years, of course I've learned other details. But I still wouldn't call myself an expert on the case.
However, all of that changed this week when I started watching (late to the game again!) The People vs. OJ Simpson. This show, created by Ryan Murphy is just so, so good. And educational too! I'm learning so much more about the case than the little I knew at the time. And what I find so fascinating is the amount of evidence the state had against OJ. Like I said, I was too young to grasp everything that was happening in the court. And I suppose, over the years I just assumed the state's case wasn't as strong as the defense's case, and that's why they lost.
Nope! The State of California had what, in any other case, would have been called an air tight case. They presented mounds of evidence and witnesses. They had a timeline and previous reports of violence against the victim committed by OJ. And yet, the defense was able to squash just about everything with ridiculous rebuttals. Nothing stuck - they were like teflon. It had to be fascinating - if not completely disheartening - to watch.
Now, 20 years on it's still fascinating. I try to think about what would happen if something like this had happened today. Would the media circus be just as insane, or would it go barely noticed? I'm not sure what scenario is more telling about the world we're living in today....

Friday Five
1. Excuse the language on this one, but it's amazing! Our President's press conference yesterday was ridiculous to say the least, and Seth lets him have it for it.
2. Seeing a show I've never seen before live. I had read Peter and the Starcatcher but never caught it on Broadway. So when Bowie Playhouse announced they'd be doing it, I was pretty excited. I gotta say, even though the actors were pretty great, the show is still just as weird as it was when I read it. I just don't get it. But the rest of the audience seemed to love it, so maybe there's something wrong with me...
3. The best news I've heard all week is the casting of Miranda Hart as Mrs. Hanigan in Annie in the West End. I've been wanting to see Miranda Hart in something fabulous since her television show went off the air, and now that I'll be in England this summer, this is the perfect excuse. I'm pretty sure she'll be brilliant!
4. I'm sort of a sucker for Children's books about very diverse things. I like kids books to share stories about lives in other places or about things that you don't usually see kids books about. Add to that, great art that I've always loved and you've got a winner. That's why I'm pretty excited about this kids book about Keith Haring. I've always loved his simple drawings (his artwork was the logo for the original Falsettos!) and now there's a great kids book about his life and why art's so important. Can't wait to snag it!
5. Coming from someone who saw this show in person, I have to say that this review is spot on! I'm so happy for Brandon Uranowitz and also I'm pretty happy for me, because with reviews like this, it means he's gotta do another engagement, right?!

Musically Weird
I'm always up for a good award show. From the dresses to the inspiring speeches, they're a great way to spend an evening. Each year I look forward to the Emmys, and the Oscars and especially the Tonys. But, never the Grammys. I know next to nothing about music - and chances are the music I do like, is most definitely not nominated. So missing the madness is nothing really new for me.
However, after seeing a few hundred reports on all that happened last night, I've never been so happy to miss it in all my life. The very first thing I saw when I woke up this morning, was Cee Lo Green covered in a gold with some creepy mask. Then there was a pregnant Beyonce covered in more gold - apparently being amazing. I'm a little confused as to why this is considered amazing, but apparently it is.
Adele was the only thing I would have liked to have seen but even she had some issues - broken grammy's and false starts. Then there were the dresses - what in the world was happening in fashion land? These dresses were huge and not so beautiful - a few were even a bit trashy. Call me a prude, but what's wrong with pretty dresses that cover more than a quarter of your body parts?
And of course there was the music. I heard the show opened with Hello by Adele. I'm fairly certain that would have been the only song I would have ever heard before. Like I said, I know next to nothing about music. But even I know that most of it sounds all the same. But music is super objective, so I'm willing to give the music a pass.
But I'm sticking to my guns on the outfits. Get a mirror people!

Adele was the only thing I would have liked to have seen but even she had some issues - broken grammy's and false starts. Then there were the dresses - what in the world was happening in fashion land? These dresses were huge and not so beautiful - a few were even a bit trashy. Call me a prude, but what's wrong with pretty dresses that cover more than a quarter of your body parts?
And of course there was the music. I heard the show opened with Hello by Adele. I'm fairly certain that would have been the only song I would have ever heard before. Like I said, I know next to nothing about music. But even I know that most of it sounds all the same. But music is super objective, so I'm willing to give the music a pass.
But I'm sticking to my guns on the outfits. Get a mirror people!

March Like a Girl
But then I went about my morning, keeping an eye on all the awesomeness happening in cities all around me. However, sometimes it pays off. Because I somehow happened upon a Women's March in downtown Annapolis, that was just starting when I arrived. It was a sign so I marched. And I was super inspired by everything I saw. Women, families, men, children, young and old all marching for the same causes. It was peaceful, and happy, and infectious! I'm extremely proud to be a girl today!

Friday Five
1. Say what you want about Barack Obama and Joe Biden (though, don't say it to me, because I love them!), you can't argue with the fact that they are both class acts. Their "bromance" over the last 8 years has been something wonderful to watch. They both seem to have the utmost respect for each other - something that's quite lacking in politics lately. So yesterday's surprise award of the Presidential Medal of Honor to Joe Biden, while not completely surprising, was something beautiful to watch. Just Vice President Biden's emotion alone, was enough to cause anyone to cry. Such a beautiful moment!
2. When I was in NY last weekend, I wandered a bit through the NYPL to warm up. While there, I happened upon this quote and fell in love with it!
3. These 2 are amazing! After Corden's amazing hosting of the Tony's last year, I feel this year he and NPH should team up and just host ALL of the award shows from now on!
4. I've been trying to focus on the positive this year. There's definitely a lot to be negative about this year, so I thought by really trying to look at the good, I may feel just a bit happier in 2017. So I've been Twittering (Tweeting? - I just don't know the intricacies of Twitter yet like our new president does...) #SmileaDay2017. Each day it's something - something silly, or something fun, or just something that made me happy for a minute. And so far it's working quite well! 5. I have never been a big late night fan. I like my sleep too much to stay up and watch. I do DVR it when I see someone good will be interviewed, but that's about it. But with the election and the new administration being what it was and is, I have been keeping a closer eye on it than usual. And since I've already declared my love for Corden - he never really takes on the issues, but he's fun and funny as hell! - I'll tell you who I'm most thankful for these days - Seth Myers. He's also fun and funny as hell, but he's smart and he's doing some of the best interviews I've seen with celebrities as well as political figures. His day after the election monologue on being angry with the outcome, but working towards change was beautiful and exactly what people needed to hear. His fearless interview with Kelly Anne Conway this week, just cemented my love for him! Go Seth! My DVR has a few percent set aside for you for as long as you need it!

Love is Love is Love
With all the pain and suffering and anger and just plain meaness that I'm already seeing, I just want to tell people all of these things. I want people to know that I don't believe in the hate. I want people to know that I'm here for them and they shouldn't be afraid. And while it might sound ridiculously naive, I hate that people are being made to feel like this.
And since I'm being forced to live in a country (even though I'd love to make the move to the Shire...) where this seems to be the new norm, I'm choosing to live by the words of the great philosopher and all around genius, Lin Manuel Miranda - Love is Love is Love is Love is Love....

One More Day
18 months. That's how long this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad election cycle has taken. That's 18 months too long for me. Between the mud-slinging, and the anger, the threats and the hate, the empty promises and the lies, I just can't take any more of it. Tomorrow it finally comes to an end, which is simultaneously a good thing and a terrifying thing.
Even though, Trump is behind in the polls, I can't help but wonder "what if?" I'd like to agree with the saner heads that truly believe he won't win. But just a few months ago I watched saner heads in England say that Brexit would never pass, and yet the morning after the vote thousands of people who "just wanted a change" voted the unthinkable into existence. That's the scariest part to me. Second scariest is the argument I heard just a few days ago - since Trump is so divisive, many people are telling their families and friends that they're not voting for him, when in fact they are. What does that mean to the exit polls? Don't you think these same people may be lying to the pollsters as well?
So very, very scary!
For better or worse, Wednesday isn't going to be fabulous. We're either stuck with someone who's been compared to Hitler or we've elected the more rational and saner, but still not perfect, choice. None of the hope we had in 2008 is there. None of the feeling of change. None of the excitement around a candidate that will do something amazing. We just want the whole darn election thing to end.
And if it does end on the wrong side of history - as I fear it may - I have my escape plan all ready. Most are headed to Canada or England if Trump wins. Both are fabulous choices - most especially England. Though I'd like to wait until they get this whole Brexit thing worked out, before making it my permanent home. Until that time, I'm off to New Zealand to live in the Shire. I'm claiming a hobbit hole as mine, and I'll live out my days cooking and crafting with the good and kind people of New Zealand.
You see, kindness and goodness and openness, that's what I'm looking for. And if Trump wins, it might take me all the way to New Zealand to find it again.

Torn
This football season, there's been a lot of talk around what players are kneeling during the anthem, and which ones aren't. There have been quite a few that have decided to take a knee to protest their rights. As a fan, I'm completely torn over the whole thing.
On one hand, as Americans they have the right to peacefully protest situations they find unfair. They aren't hurting anyone and they aren't being violent, or angry. They're quietly sharing their thoughts on the matter at hand. That's an honorable act and something that's proven change. I may not like it, but I believe they have the right to do it.
But on the other hand, I really don't like that they're doing it this way. When the chatter of more players joining in began, it was September 11. How could these players even think of anything else but honoring the first responders, the victims of the attacks and their families and friends? Military and First Responders were at the games that weekend holding up giant flags, and some players still decided to kneel.
Also, the players that are making millions and millions of dollars are protesting the entire US police force. This is the same police force that is putting their lives on the line to protect them at games, and at public appearances, that aren't making a fraction of what the players are making for a single game. Yes, there are some bad officers out there and changes do need to happen, but you can't say that every single cop is bad. A majority of the force are good people that go to work everyday and work to keep us safe.
So that's where I am right now. I hate seeing these players crucified for peacefully protesting, but I also hate some of these players bad-mouthing and stereotyping all police officers for doing their jobs.

Punked - I Wish
As I watch the RNC unfold in Ohio, I have decided that this whole election cycle is just one giant prank on the United States. Not only is it a prank, but the very few lovely law makers have decided that we can keep President Obama for 4 more years. Really. That's what's happening here. The lovely lawmakers are just waiting for the right moment to tell us this. I've also decided, that that particular moment is now. It's gone just a bit too far, so now's the time people. Start yelling Surprise...
This has to be the only explanation, right? At this moment, the guest speakers at a major political convention - a convention that is full of law makers and politicians that should be shaping the United States - are Scott Baio, Antonio Sabato Jr. and one of the dudes from Duck Dynasty. How low can you go? What inspiring tid-bit or call to action could 2 actors and a reality show star share?
In the last 4 days alone, there's been so much gun violence, it's scary. Where are police officers or the military? Surely they would have made better speakers. However, instead of shaping the conversation, they're just focusing on "winning." That's the problem. Trump cares about the finish line, not what happens next.
Also, in Ohio right now, these people that are voting for Trump because of his backward views on foreign policy, religious freedom and immigration are currently allowed to openly carry weapons - not just handguns but rifles too - directly into the convention center. What sense does this make? Hasn't there been enough pain and suffering due to guns over the last few months?
I saw something on Facebook this morning that said "My biggest fear for the future is that a UFO will land, an alien will get out and say 'Take me to your Leader.' How embarrassing that will be..." So very true. The eyes of the world are on us right now, and we're doing nothing to show them how good we can be.

Slightly Lost...
"What exactly is Pokemon Go and more importantly why do I care?"
After seeing about a dozen articles on the subject over the course of about 12 hours, this was an actual question I asked my workmates yesterday morning. I was given the following answer: It's an alternate reality version of Pokemon hunting using the camera on your phone. Now, I'm not a complete moron when it comes to technology. I use my phone quite a bit and happen to love all sorts of apps that make my live easier and more fun. But after getting that answer, my first response was
Huh????!!!
Those individual words make sense but when you throw them all together in a sentence, I'm lost! From what I can tell, this newest tech craze requires you to wander around aimlessly looking for "Pokemon" that aren't actually anywhere, through the lens of your phone, losing all sight of the traffic, other people, or crimes going on around you. That much I get.
But I'm getting lost in the Pokemon themselves. How exactly do you find something that isn't technically there - or anywhere if you really want to get specific? They're just little animals made of computer code. Are they "put" places? Do you find one, then share the photo? And then do other people locate that exact same spot to find the same Pokemon? Is that the thing? Because if it is, I'm seeing loads of struggling businesses that don't get a lot of foot traffic being brought back from the brink of disaster by Pikachu and his friends!
Then there's the case of what happens when you do find them. Do you have to do something special to capture them? Is taking a picture with your camera sufficient to "catch" them? Because I gotta say, I've almost exceeded my phone's limits just taking pictures of everyday life. I gotta think that these people that are snapping away at Pokemon are going to need more space on their phones to store them all, eventually!
I have all of these questions just trying to decipher the game. I haven't even brought up the complete incomprehension of articles I've read about the fall-out from the game. Auschwitz and Arlington National Cemetery have had to request people not play the game in their facilities. (That should not have to be said!) People have had accidents attempting to Pokemon Go and Drive (Can't you just see that ad campaign now? Instead of an egg indicating your brain on drugs, there'll be a smashed Poke-ball to signify your brain on Pokemon Go... : ) While another article shared the story of a husband who was caught cheating because of the game.
And this game has only been out in the States for less than a week!
Isn't that slightly terrifying? I know that Pokemon Go was created as a way to get gamers out and about and moving, which I'm all for. But I think I liked it better when they were holed up in their basements playing. At least then they were safe, sound and not walking into trees....

To Exit or Not to Exit?
Before I go on for a paragraph or two, I'd like the record to reflect that there are many, many things I don't understand about the EU Referendum. For all my love of England, I'm fairly clueless on this one. I've tried to read articles and do the research, and yet it's still not making sense. So be forewarned, if you do understand what's happening in England tonight, the next sentences may make me sound like a dunce. I'm really not, just confused that's all.
For starters, the whole act of a referendum in the first place is totally alien to me. A few months ago, there was a Scottish referendum on whether or not to leave the UK. Now there's another for leaving the EU. How do these referendums get decided on? I know people vote on the actual referendum, but who is the deciding body that makes the decision for what the country will be voting on? For an entire country to secede from a union, seems like a HUGE deal. Was this a parliamentary decision, or did one of the parties just decide that it might be fun to completely re-write geography, finance, and history because they were bored?
And that's not even addressing the point of leaving the union in the first place. I understand why some Scots wanted to leave the UK. They wanted to exert their independence and stand on their own feet. That I could see. But in this case, the UK is already its own independent country. They don't even have the same money system as the rest of the Union. There doesn't seem to be an upside to leaving. What's the point?
Finally there's the reporting and opinions on the referendum. From what I've read, seen and heard over the last few months, no one has openly said they want to leave the EU (except of course the politicians - I'm speaking more on the public in general). However, in the exit polls that I'm watching right now, it looks like the country is split almost 50/50. It's pretty close. Of course, on one of the paper's front pages for tomorrow, there's a quote from a pro-Brexit politician conceding the vote to the Remain-ers. I'm confused. Don't all the returns have to be counted first? Shouldn't he check with the rest of his party before he goes about waving a white flag willy nilly?
Like I said, I have no idea what's going on. In my opinion, without a shred of understanding, I like the idea of staying in the Union. How different would it be for the Brits to not have the ability to freely travel around Europe? Passports and visas would be a bit of hassle for members that have never had to deal with them before. Also, they're pretty much already getting the best of both worlds - support from the greater Union and their own government & financial system (which is doing better than a lot of places, it must be said.)
But then again, there's every possibility that I'm wrong...I suppose I'll just wait to hear what Twitter says in the morning to determine my real feelings on the subject : )
