In honor of Star Wars Week, I have a confession to make - I've never actually seen Star Wars...like at all. This isn't like I've seen bits and pieces. I have never seen even a minute of any of the movies. And contrary to just about everyone I've ever spoken to, I'm ok with it. It's not the sci-fi thing. I actually like sci-fi and fantasy - I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and some of the Marvel movies are awesome! But I just don't get the whole star wars thing.
I think it might have something to do with how big it all is. You have to remember like 12 hours worth of crap before watching the next movie. That's a lot of plot lines to remember when there's a few years (or decades) between the movies. Remembering what happened in the previous Harry Potter book from the summer before was bad enough. Remembering who C3PO vs. R2D2 is just a pain in the neck.
So you can imagine, with all the hub bub around Star Wars, how super excited I am with seeing it all the darn time. It's EVERY WHERE. It's on clothes, toys, grown up toys, vehicles, subway sandwich and about a million other items I have no desire to purchase. I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of any and all romantic comedies. I've never been able to purchase a robot from Love, Actually or a a fancy Bridget Jones dress. I'm pretty sure that's somehow sexist. Right?! At the very least, it's darn annoying.
From all the reviews, I'm hearing the movie will be fantastic, so I don't foresee it going away any time soon. Though, I'd really like it if we could just go back to Santa and Christmas all day every day. I actually miss that. And afterall, Chewbacca just can't pull off a fancy suit and hat like good old Saint Nick!

Squee!
A few weeks ago Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk started a kick starter for a show about the convention circuit. The show would be called Con Man and it would revolve around the mishaps of 2 actors that were on a prematurely cancelled but much loved sci-fi show about 10 years ago. One character would move on to fame and fortune while the other would play the "best friend" role for the last 10 years of his career. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It's pretty much the script of their real lives after Firefly was cancelled. It promises to be awesome!
What was pretty unbelievable was that they set a fairly lofty goal - around $430K. In about 24 hours, their goal was completely funded by every single person in the Sci-fi fandom (not really, but close). And in 16 days, they managed to raise over $2.3 million. That's ridiculous! It looks pretty amazing, and honestly, I'm still mourning the loss of Firefly, so I'll take what I can get. I was pretty excited about it.
That is until today.
I've decided that while their plan is fantastic, this indie gogo is even more fantastic and much more deserving. (I'd embed it if I could, but I can't. Definitely click on the link and watch the video - it's so worth it!) First off, it's being created by Rob Benedict and Richard Speight, 2 fairly unknown actors unless you're a Supernatural fan. And in that case, they're God and the Angel Gabriel - so you could say that they're kind of a big deal. And their idea, while pretty much exactly the same (they even address this in their video) seems more real, and more believable rather than just being fan service. These guys attend every last convention they possibly can and they interact with the fans on a monthly basis. They know this community inside and out. If anyone's going to do it justice, they are.
While I love Nathan Fillion, and I support any project that gets him more screen time, it's a little harder for me to support his project. Honestly, the $435K could have been pocket change for him. Rob & Rich have a much smaller goal and actually could put the funded money to good use.
What warms my little geeky heart though, is the support they're getting. I mean in 12 hours, they're 50% to their goal, which is so deserved! But every single one of the producers, fellow actors and anyone who's ever been on Supernatural has shown their support on Social Media for the project. I'm also willing to bet, they've actually given money to the project as well. Really?! How often do you see a group of people care so much about each other, and seem to really mean it. I'm so happy for them!
Go Rob & Rich! I can't wait to see the series!

Happy 50th to a Creative Genius
Aside from being a pretty influential writer and producer, he's also pretty well respected for work ethic, strong character development and keeping a close knit group of friends and colleagues who will answer his call whenever it comes. On top of that, he's an unabashed geek who knows what the geek community wants and never stops striving to give it to them. In short, he's a pretty amazing human being. Happy Birthday Joss! Here's to many more years of creativity and geekdom!

Friday Five
1. Reading Rainbow Kickstarter: So I'm not sure if this is a new thing or I'm way behind the times, but the fact that Levar Burton was able to raise 2 million dollars in 2 days to bring Reading Rainbow to the web restores my faith in humanity! I'm a big reader and have always been. I used to LOVE watching Reading Rainbow as a kid. Kids today (caution, old lady speaking) are so focused on ipads and video games that they aren't getting into books as much as they should. And having the king of reading back on air to show them how much fun reading can be is just what they need!
2. I'm not sure why this tweet made me laugh as much as it did, but every time I look at it, I giggle : )
3. My current obsession is rubber stamps. I used to avoid them like the plague mostly because I was worried I'd mess up whatever I was working on and have to start from the beginning again. Now I can't get enough of them. The dollar bin at Michael's is like crack. I can't not buy at least one. But I've upped my game a bit and started checking out specially made ones on Etsy. RubberMoonStamps, Melody the Cloud and Mountainside Crafts are my current favorites. I already bought the Mason Jar and a Tolkien quote from Mountainside Crafts which I use ALL the time. And I'm currently coveting the Sugar Skull from RubberMoon Stamps and ALL the Doctor Who stamps from Melody the Cloud. So cute!
4. The Wil Wheaton Project: It's a fairly nerdy version of The Soup for SciFi nerds, hosted by, you can probably guess. It premiered this week and made me laugh... a LOT. I'm a fan of his anyway and his particular brand of snarky but never mean humor is perfect for this show. I'm hoping they get to do lots more mostly because the SciFi scene isn't so big in the summer. I'm already imagining all the fun they can have when all the new shows and movies come out in the fall. Go watch! It's worth it! (And while you're at it, check out Heroes of Cosplay as well - It's fascinating in a weird sort of way and you just can't look away.)
5. While this is a ridiculously lame thing to get excited about, it never the less made me all sorts of happy this week: It's Watermelon season! Yum! Usually this early, they're not so hot but my first one was delicious! I'm currently craving some more right now since I finished it off at lunch. Bring on summer!

Living in the Future
While I'm aware of just how cool it is to live in the future, I don't often find myself using the tech we have to its full capacity. Basically my computer is for Facebooking and Pinteresting, and that's about it. I don't even know what Vine or Reddit are. They're just vague terms thrown around on BuzzFeed to make me feel like an old lady. But after my foray into podcasts last week went so swimmingly, I thought I'd try out a webcast (which may or may not be a new thing in tech, I'm just happy I know that's what it's called). And I have to say it was pretty darn amazing!
There's a Creation Sci-Fi Convention happening in Washington DC this weekend as we speak. As part of this convention, Misha Collins and lots of other Supernatural peeps were debuting 2 live-action shorts they created all benefiting Random Acts. Using a service called StageIt, people all over the world could sign in, pay anything you want (this was all for charity, so I'm assuming lots of people were generous rather than paying nothing), and watch the premiere in real time. Not only were people watching it together, but they were also interacting via comments. Of course, at some point, these comments became a mob mentality with lots of people being mean to each other, but that's beside the point.
Aside from the shorts being pretty darn hilarious, the cast and crew were delightful. They seemed rather scattered and there were quite a few technical difficulties. But I can let it slide as this is apparently a new thing and they seemingly broke the internet (apparently LOTS of people like Misha Collins). What really matters is that it worked, and rather than just 150 people in some ball room in DC seeing it, thousands of people all over the world were able to share the moment. What a way to premiere a movie!
An act of charity, super funny people, and a new movie all mixed with some serious technological advances? Sometimes it's pretty cool to live in 2014!
