Trivia Tuesday

~ Trivia would probably go alot more smoothly for our team if we were awarded 10 extra points every week simply for dressing up. The costumes may get old after a while, but 10 points could be helpful in our current slump.

~ Samhain - which is apparently the festival that Halloween is derived from - can be pronounced 3 different ways (2 of which don't even use any of the sounds the letters actually make) - and I've been mispronouncing it for a very long time. Also, my defense is that they totally said it the way I say it in an episode of Supernatural.

~ In a half time question on serial killers, we were able to name 4 of the 5 correctly.  I'm not sure that says anything good about our team.

~ You'd think in an evening that started with the question "Which are the 2 colors that are most closely associated with Halloween? we'd be on fire, but of course 4th place slump hit again.  Way too many people know stuff...

~ I learned this evening that if you look in a mirror at your reflection at midnight on Halloween, you'll see your future spouse in the mirror.  I'm equal parts curious and terrified to do this.

~ Before pumpkins, people would carve jack o lanterns out of turnips.  Just how impressive could a jack o lantern made out of a turnip be?  That's a pretty puny little carving.  On the other hand, I'll bet it's harder to carve a turnip than a big pumpkin so maybe it would be slightly impressive...

~ In things I've never ever heard of, and most likely will never need to know again - the singer of Monster Mash (the song everyone hears on Halloween) is Bobby Boris Pickett and the Crypt Keepers.

~ And from the weird laws department, silly string is banned in Hollywood on Halloween.  Why you may ask?  Because it's a pain in the neck to clean up.  Though it's a pain in the neck to clean the other 364 days of the year as well, so I'm not exactly sure what sets apart its annoyingness on Halloween.

A Night of Harry

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the trivia people that run our weekly trivia games would be holding a Harry Potter Trivia night.  Being big nerds we were very excited about the prospect - as was the rest of Baltimore.  It turns out everyone in Baltimore seems to be over the moon for Harry Potter because so many people signed up, that they had to draw names from a hat.  4 bars turned into 7 bars, and still teams were turned away.  Luckily for us, Team Buy me a Butterbeer First (a fabulous, if I do say so myself, take on our usual name of Team Buy me a Drink First).

Anyway, I learned a few things during this experience.  For one, I'm so not a big a Harry Potter fan as I thought I was.  In one entire evening, I knew the answer to exactly 2 questions.  Well, I'm not even sure you can call it 2 questions - it was more like 2/6 of a single question since it was half time and the question was 6 parts.

Other people, like 2 of my team mates and seemingly the rest of the bar, are HUGE fans.  Like, fans to the N'th degree.  They were naming patronuses, and lines that people spoke, and spells, and a million other things that I read about and then immediately forgot. Like I said, it was embarassing - for me.  I had the nerve to call myself a fan, and yet here was about 100 other people that were blowing me out of the water.

There I was in my Harry Potter gear - a borrowed Gryffindor sweater and Hogwarts scarf (though that was not perfect, since I'm undoubtedly a Hufflepuff), and a custom made wand (thanks to one of the super fans in the group) and I didn't even know the answer to the very first question!  Abysmal!

However, even with all of my unknowing, we managed to have a blast.  And as it turns out, it was perfectly ok that I didn't know anything because the 2 super fans in the group knew enough for the rest of us and we managed to win.  Not even just win.  We won with more points than we've ever gotten at regular trivia.  It was pretty impressive.  Though, for all of our hard work we were gifted with a gift card for the bar we were playing in, and a one piece pair of pjs (just one - even though there were 5 people on the team...)  But I suppose the bragging rights were more important.  Now if I could just get them to hold a Doctor Who trivia, I may do just a tad bit better! : )

Trivia Tuesday

Since I last wrote about Trivia, we switched again to a new place which means we get our usual evening back again. Of course, this particular bar seems a bit smarter than we are, so we tend to spend a great deal of time in last place or as close to last place as you can get without actually being in last place.  However, this evening for the first time since we began going, we actually placed.  Yay second place!

So without further ado, here are the things we learned this evening at Trivia...

~ When I attempt to take a non-logical leap on a question regarding sternutation (sterno is hot so maybe sternutation means to sweat...), the answer will be a big fat Ster-NO!  (For the record, sternutation is sneezing in case you may have thought my reasoning was at all false.)  Also, the stuff that ignites gun powder in old guns, is also not sterno...

~ Maybe a question on the top 8 fashion trends that men found sexy on women was not the best question to ask on a week where so many women were sharing stories of sexual harassment.  Just a thought...

~ The USA Men's Soccer team was eliminated from World cup contention by Trinidad and Tobago - a match that was shown during last week's trivia evening, which is the only reason any of us knew the "sportsball" question.  Also, the rumor that President Trump thought it was unfair that the US needed to play 2 teams (i.e. the countries Trinidad AND Tobago) may have been a rumor or it may have been true.  The fact that we can't decide is really the sad part.

~ In Taco Bell hot sauce packets, the hotter the sauce is the more sodium it has.  I'm fairly certain this defies all rules of cooking.

~ The tiny (in comparison) country of Norway has more gold medals in the Winter Olympics than the giant country of Russia.  Talk about the little guy taking on the big guys!  Go Norway!

~ Thanks to Jensen Ackles singing this song - a song I hated until he sang - we knew that in The Weight, they pulled into Nazareth.  Cute boys always help me remember things more clearly - well everything except what I should say to them and how I should act...

~ There's currently a book on James Beard on my bookshelf that is unread.  This is to blame for us not knowing that the Beard Awards started in 1991.  In my defense the cover is really brown and boring so, it doesn't exactly look inviting.

Trivia Wednesday

~ I am apparently, an old soul.  I mean really?  Tell me something I don't know.

~ Even though Lacrosse is Maryland's state sport, neither Hopkins or UMD has the most national titles in the sport, contrary to what we may have thought.  It's Syracuse, just in case you were wondering.

~ At our new found trivia location, sometimes you have to order beer 2 at a time, if you want them during the game at all. Let's just say, service is not something this particular bar is known for.

~ However, it is amusing to watch the cooks in the open kitchen get yelled at by the expediter.  When the game is moving along slowly, this provides endless entertainment.

~ Oscar Romero was not the horror director that died a few weeks ago, but George Romero was.

~ Sometimes you can get an answer correct even if it's for the wrong reason.  Points are points.

~ When a question is asked on the USSR, "Back in the USSR" is the only acceptable song to play.  However, when the category is "It's a Kind of Magic", how did they not play Queen?

~ Chromophobia is a fear of colors.  How does one avoid all colors?  Black and white are actually colors, so in theory you'd be afraid of those too...

~ I disagree with a question on topiaries being under the category of art.  Topiaries are interesting but I'd really call them a talent, definitely not art.

Trivia Wednesday

~ It's mildly irritating and kinda creepy when a drunk dude decides to make the empty seat at your table, his seat. It's even creepier when his drunk friends pull up 2 more chairs and join him, and they all start asking you what the answers are...Maybe we should stop looking so friendly.

~ Some crazy dude sat on top of a flagpole for 439 days to protest the price of gas. If he would have gone to work for those 439 days, he could have afforded gas - just saying.

~ Turns out the only mathematical principle I can recall with a good deal of accuracy is order of operations, which as it turns out came in handy for tonight's math question. I was so happy I answered it correctly, I wasn't even bothered by the fact that it was only the second question, meaning it was a soft ball question..,

~ The bone between your eyebrows is called a glabella, which sounds more like a music festival than it does a part of the body.

~ The definition of "watching" tennis is to have it on in the background while you're doing most anything else. You don't u derstand what's happening but it provides noise.

~ At our new place of trivia, ordering in a sassy fashion is the only way the staff will get your order correct. For instance, one person to,d the waitress this evening that rum and pickles make him sad, so please give him vodka and no pickles on his sandwich, as they've done before. Not sure why it works, but his order was perfect!

~ A 5 letter word ending in F that means a bundle of wheat is sheaf. I went to a pub called the WheatSheaf in England, I totally should have gotten that.

~ The max number of points you can receive in old school pacman is 3,333,360. My only question is why? Why is it such a weird number? Why isn't it 999,999?

Trivia Wednesday

~ After almost a whole 11 week series at our current location, we're still not sold on the food or the dude.  We still miss our old guy and our old bar quite a lot.  However, after a disastrous week last week - that I thankfully missed - the wait staff was much better and no one had to complain about their food/drinks to the manager.  So I suppose that's a plus.

~ The half time question was finally a visual question - I love deciphering photos.  Of course, when the topic is losers in great sports photos, we're most likely not going to do well.  Not only did we have to figure out who the photo was of, but we then had to name a team that the person in the photo was playing and ultimately lost the game.  Yep, in this particular situation, we gained a big fat 0 points.  That's the only time that's ever happened.  Usually we can at least scrape together 3 points...so sad!

~ Snuffie on Sesame Street was my most favorite.  He apparently has a first name and it's Aloyious.  I'm kind of obsessed with how cute that is - but I didn't know that at all.  I was putting my eggs in the Barnaby basket.  Also, it didn't help that the trivia dude kept pronouncing Aloyious as Aloy-sous.

~ A muddler is the tool used to muddle a drink.  All those years watching food shows, finally gave me some alcohol knowledge.  That might be the only thing I know about booze.

~ To be risible means you're prone to laughter.  That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.  Wouldn't you think it would mean you're prone to getting angry - as in getting a rise out of someone?  I'd like to see the reasoning for laughter...

~ The shark that stuns his prey with his tail is not called the Sting Ray Shark. Just like the McDonald's lower calorie version of the McDLT is not called McDreamy or McSteamy : )

~ If the answer to a question is Bassa Nova like it was tonight, I will always start singing "Blame it on the Bassa Nova" and start quoting this scene from West Wing.

~ The largest watermelon ever grown weighed 350 pounds.  I'm pretty sure I could make a good go at that in one sitting...

Trivia Wednesday

~ Turns out that when the PowerPoint that holds all of the questions acts up, sometimes you see the answers for the next 3 questions.  However, since you're a good Catholic girl with a good amount of Catholic guilt, you'd rather write a wrong answer instead of cheat.  However, no one on your team feels that same way...

~ Reason #987 to go to NYC - to see 1984 currently playing on Broadway.  Because aside from seeing the answers (see above), there's no way I would have ever guessed the language in the book was called Newspeak.

~ Even when your team manages to gain an impressive 134 points at the end, you will still only be in 3rd place when you are playing at a serious heavy-hitter restaurant.  The number of points these people manage to get on a weekly basis is ridiculous.

~ The rating "the worst!" fluctuates.  There are 2 levels - normal and the worst.  And pretty much anyone can be deemed the worst at any point in time.  Also, those who are sometimes the worst but are most often normal, are called "cuspy."

~ It helps when a player googles some info on the Facebook hint of the week ahead of time.  Because if we hadn't discussed how surprising it was that Dr. Oz was Muslim, we would never have gotten that question correct. Yay Google!

~ It's wonderful that Shakespeare only wrote one play that contained a sorcerer, because The Tempest helped get us 40 points.

~ Also, my ridiculous love for all things MASH, really came in handy for questions on Military rank.

~ Is it a good thing or a bad thing that our team answered 3 questions on Drugs in Songs correctly?

~ Once again, the sports ball questions are the bane of our existence!  Doubly so this time, because it wasn't just one question, it was a half time question, so we didn't gain lots of points!

~ File this under things that I never even thought of - a rule in the NFL states that all chin guards must be white.  Why exactly is this the case? I haven't googled yet, because it's much more entertaining to speculate.

Trivia Flag Day

~ Well it would seem that we have finally chosen the new place to have trivia.  I suppose I shouldn't have underestimated the power of cheap drinks.  The food is yucky and the servers are slow, but the cheap drinks make everyone else happy.  And seeing as they never charge me for my Iced Tea, I suppose I'm a little happy too.

~ I feel they really missed a chance at having some Flag related questions - maybe some Fun with Flags : ) - this evening since it's Flag Day.  Of course, not a single person on my team realized the reason I was wearing Red, White and Blue was that it was Flag day, so maybe the same could be said of the Trivia Question Writers.

~ The sheer joy we get from pulling an number out of thin air, and having that number be the answer is ridiculously embarassing.  It really is a feat of fabulous guessing.

~ When the facebook topic of the week is Dad Jokes, I'm pretty sure it's cheating to lead with a dad joke then ask a question about math.  Not cool dude.

~ Some crazy person ate a 12 inch pizza in 23.5 seconds.  I get sick just thinking about that.  Why would any one in their right might even attempt that?

~ As much as it pains me to say this in Baltimore, we answered a question on the number of post-season wins correctly with Tom Brady.  Oh ugh!  How could they even ask that question in Baltimore?

~ I got excited when 2 of the categories this evening were Close Shave and Pie me, because I thought my viewing of Sweeney Todd this past weekend would finally help.  Alas, not so much.  Though I did know what was in Shepherd's Pie so at least there was that.

~ When you answer the last question correctly (Statdler and Waldorf of the Muppets!) and wager 40 points, and you still wind up in 7th place, almost 30 points away from the winner, you know you've entered a tough crowd...

Trivia Wednesday

~ This week's adventure took us to a casino to play at one of Guy Fieri's restaurants.  I'm so not a fan of his brand of "food" but the venue itself was nice.  Of course, some people indulged in some gambling before we started.  If they do that every week, we'll be broke by Christmas.  However, the drinks are happy hour prices, so I suppose that helps with the purse strings...

~ The motto of the FBI is Fidelity. Bravery. Integrity.  which is an acronym for the FBI.  While it may be an easy few points, I question the FBI's creativity when developing their motto.

~ When given the choice between 2 good answers, our team will always choose the wrong one.  It's a mathematical fact...

~ There was a question on George Clooney and someone on our team didn't know who he was.  I feel that person should be kicked off the team for not knowing such an important person in history.  Also, he's still so dreamy!

~ Prague is a city - not a country which I thought for some reason.  You can imagine how confused people were when I wanted them to tell me what the capital of Prague was.

~ When one of 4 choices is a hurricane, and the trivia guy plays Rock me like a Hurricane, it's a safe bet that the answer is Hurricane.

~ My tour of the Midway in San Diego did nothing for me in the getting answers to questions on the Battle of Midway correct department.  Though thanks to Trivia we now know (something we most definitely should have already known) that D-day and the Battle of Midway were a year and 364 days apart.

~ Questions on the countries of Africa are the bane of our existence...

Trivia Thursday

~ When attending Trivia at a super dive bar, white capris, a navy cardigan and pearls may not be appropriate attire - or so I've been informed.

~ Also, as open as I am to all sorts of people, it turns out I'm super judgey when it comes to the type of people that frequent dive bars and dive bars in general.  And on an entirely different note, why, God, why would anyone eat the popcorn that's just sitting on the tables in baskets?

~ Finally a Shakespeare question, and it's on Romeo and Juliet?  Ugh!  My absolute least favorite and one the English teacher at the table hadn't read (how is that possible!?) This particular question lead to some conversation on whether Shakespeare is better when read or performed.  It's obviously so much better when you see it live!

~ Questions on Basketball, Hockey and the geographic size of states seemed to be our downfall this evening.  What is it about sports and geography that kills us every time?

~ In 1977 Ron Howard directed and starred in a movie called Grand Theft Auto. He was 23 at the time.  How is that possible?  I can't even direct my car half the time, and he was directing movies?

~ My Modern Family knowledge was better than my Friends knowledge this evening.  Fizbo is so much easier to remember than knowing Elle Macpherson was Joey's roommate.

~ It's quite possible to remember all the words to American Pie even when the quiz-dude decides to play the Weird Al - Star Wars version of the song instead.

~ The quiz that I took today that determined my intelligence level was that of someone with a PhD (it's not) did not do too much for me this evening at trivia.  However, I was able to reach the answer to a question on Toni Morrison's Beloved 2 seconds before the English teacher, so I'm calling that a win.

Trivia Monday

~ And so the traveling continues. Tonight's outing wasn't nearly as horrendous as I thought it might be. The bar was a neighborhood dive with a little too much Fox News for my liking, but aside from that, not too bad.

~ And honestly, how bad could it have been since we came in first place. Woohoo!

~ The half-time question was all about Jack's on television. On the very day when the Will & Grace trailer was released, not a single question was asked on Just Jack. I feel they missed a prime opportunity.

~ The bestie was apparently born in 1876 because she was the only person in the bar that answered Pollywog to a question, when we could have just said tadpole. The question-asker thought that was as ridiculous as we did but still got our 12 points, so yay for being born in 1876!

~ The KC Chiefs had an undefeated season but not before the Patriots also had one. There goes Tom Brady ruining things again...

~ My complete and undying love for the show Bones got us 2 answers correct tonight. Though not the question on an actual bone.

~ When a question is asked on the US State that ends with 3 vowels and the question-asker jokes that the answer is New Jerseeee, our team gets way too confused for a bunch of rather smart people. Jokes really aren't that funny when someone had to explain them to you.

~ When you don't have a clue, go with your first answer always. Don't scratch it out 10 times. It might not win you shots, but it could get you 2 points. (In this instance, we won neither...)

~ Something I did learn while ranging against Fox News was that a romphim is a romper for men.  Though the boys confirm that no man or woman should be wearing romphims or hers.

~ Perhaps when the scorekeeper messes up the score 3 separate times, she should have score-keeping taken away. Not saying that this was me. I'm just saying math is hard : )

~ Movies can be so bad that they're actually good. The movie that was used to prove this point was "Mannequin."

Trivia Wednesday

~ Tonight's outing was to a Pirate Bar - not such a fan.  The food isn't terrible.  However, the seating, while cute and in-theme - large kegs and barstools - isn't the greatest for sitting around for more than 2 hours.  I could never quite figure out where to put my knees.  Anyway, we vote No on this place, so I suppose it's off to find somewhere else.

~ With the new place, I swear either the questions got harder or I got dumber.  One or the other because I knew exactly 2 answers this evening.  And the others I didn't know, I couldn't have even made a logical guess.  I had absolutely no clue.

~ LBD is apparently an acronym for Little Black Dress, which was popularized by Breakfast at Tiffany's and happened to be one of the 2 answers I knew.  Why does one need an acronym for Little Black Dress?  It's a pretty simple phrase to say : )

~ When the half time question is on Fake Doctors, it's a reason to get excited.  When all of those fake doctors are stars of movies, it's a reason to get sad.  Do you know how many hospital shows I've watched in my lifetime?  A whole bunch!  Do you know how many doctor movies I've watched?  About 2.

~ There were questions on WNBA, NBA, and Wrestling.  If we were playing Jeopardy, I'd say the theme for the evening was "Things Kristen knows nothing about..."

~ What does it say about me, that the only other answer I knew this evening was the words to "All the Single Ladies" by Beyonce?

~ The phrase "I Am Groot", while hilarious to pretty much everyone in the bar, was not the answer to a single question this evening, which is a shame : )

Trivia Tuesday (A Little Late...)

~ Apparently, if you are in a plane crash, you are least likely to die if you're in the back of the plane.  Of course, not if the plane is actually hit by another plane. This was a conversation that was had this evening.

~ As an add-on - Would you rather die in a plane crash or live in a plane crash if 90% of the passengers on the plane died?  Also a conversation that was had this evening - one I really didn't want to take part in.  Why tempt fate when I'll be on a plane in a few weeks?

~ The first 2 questions of the evening were on Pepsi (the ad campaign that was suspended due to backlash) and SNL (who plays Sean Spicer on the show?)  The third question was on the largest sea in Europe (the Caspian Sea.) I feel that escalated a little too quickly.

~ Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms.  My only question is who cleans all of these rooms?  Instead of a cleaning service, I think the Queen must have a cleaning army.

~ When the category is The Hills are Alive - I really shouldn't have much faith in myself knowing the answer.  Though it's un-American (or so I've been told) I hate The Sound of Music.  However, even I know that the family she worked for is the Von Trapp family.

~ Daft Punk is from France.  3 things affected my answering of this question.  1. Not sure I could pick out a single member of Daft Punk in a lineup.  2. I wasn't entirely sure they weren't from America. 3. I'm not sure I could name a single song by them.

~ Having a quiz question asker that comes to pick up your answers from you so you don't have to get up each time is ridiculously convenient if not quite lazy on our part.

~ Math says that risking 40 points on a question where you've narrowed down the answer to 2 possibilities, requires that you choose the wrong answer every time.

Trivia Thursday

~ In the great trivia travel tour of 2017, we learned that all bars don't have trivia on Tuesday nights.  So sometimes we have to test other nights.  Thursday nights are good in that we only have one more day of the work week but bad because we have to wait this late in the week to play.

~ Tonight's place was Max's Taphouse in Fells Point.  In the words of my friend Jen "Too much!" The bar was teeny-tiny, super-loud, and chock-full of people.  You had to practically complete a maze just to hand in each answer.  And hearing a single thing your team was saying was out of the question.  The only positive was the beer - for some people.  For me, even the iced tea sucked so it was pretty much a bust.  I suppose it's good that we all hated it equally so there's no chance of making this our new home!

~ Sometimes when you try to compliment someone on their Tardis tattoo that's on their forearm, but you tap your own forearm to make the point, they will think you're asking "what time the trivia starts" and get a little annoyed because it's not their "shindig."

~ Even Tater Tots can't save a really crappy and loud night!

~ The first 2 questions were on Justin Timberlake and Twilight - I think this says something about me that I hadn't a single clue about the answers. I'm not sure what, but it definitely says something.

~ Connoisseur is the most ridiculous word to have to spell - and the fact that it's a word I've never been able to spell is a pain in the neck. Thanks to our other speller we were so close - just one tiny little "S" off.

~ When the series finale of Girls aired this past Sunday, and there's a category on HBO - you just know it's going to be a Girls question.  Also, yay for some of my Lena Dunham knowledge paying off!

~ Grams of Fat and Calories are 2 very different numbers...

~ When your team wins 2 rounds of shots, and still manages to come in very last place (for the first time ever!) you know that this bar and this trivia-dude and this crowd are not for you.

Trivia Tuesday

Back to trivia on Tuesday this week.  Because of this whole traveling team thing - due to the best bar ever closing down - we've had to try new places.  This week's bar was super close to home and had trivia a whole half hour earlier.  That meant with driving and things, I'd be home an hour earlier than usual.  I should have known it would all be too good to be true.  The service was terrible.  The other theater people were a bit redneck-y and the food wasn't even that good.  Ugh!  So much for finding a new home close to home...

~ Our streak of winning first place each week at our travel destinations ended this week, too.  Boo!  Of course, we still managed to make a pretty good showing.

~ My unlimited knowledge of 2017 Master's trivia that I thought for sure was going to be a question this week, did absolutely nothing for me.  Not a single question on golf but a few on basketball.  Why does anyone know anything about that ridiculous sport!?

~ Teamwork makes the dream work as they say.  I knew Katey Segall was in "that motorcycle show." And my friend Kevin knew "that motorcycle show" was called Sons of Anarchy.  How's that for working as a team?

~ The only time I had ever heard the word Rumspringa was on an episode of Bones set in Amish country.  Glad to see that my great taste in television helps out every once in a while.

~ Most people on our team have a top 5 television show list that they'd watch all the time if they had to.  Apparently Dawson's Creek is on that list for one team mate.  Why?  We all judged her pretty hard for that one.  But she did get the question correct so we can't judge her too harshly.

~ I was fairly convinced that Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney sang Ebony and Ivory together.  However, I was wrong.  Turns out that's a whole other song.  You'd think that the Ebony dude on my team to my Ivory would have corrected me since he knew it was wrong, but not so much. I don't think he and I are going to make as good a duo as Paul and Stevie Wonder...

Trivia Tuesday

~ A new trivia venue can really throw a whole night off. Of course making that trivia 30 minutes later than usual also throws everyone for a loop. Hope I'm able to drag myself out of bed in the morning...

~ A strong Scots accent - which I'm usually pretty good with - added to terrible acoustics makes deciphering category and team names next to impossible.

~ Somewhere along the line we became a second round team - seeing as we bombed the first round, starting with the very first question.

~ The correct answer to how many light years is Polaris from the earth, is not "so many" as much as I'd like it to be.

~ Occident is a word that is used in reference to the Western World and is not just the British pronunciation of Accident.

~ The problem with guessing boy names that occur in the NATO alphabet is that sooner or later, they all sound probable. Then you're pretty much just naming boy names.

~ You're food should be right up, after we've already waited 25 minutes - is totally waiter speak for "Crap! I forgot to put that order in..."

~ Vinson Nassif is the tallest mountain in Antarctica which explains why the heck I've lived for 33 years and have never heard of it. Who knows what the heck happens in that frozen tundra?!

~ Unfortunately naming Track & Field as the event Carl Lewis earned his gold medals in is not enough to warrant points...

~ When the last 3 questions all revolve around alcohol, I can pretty much just stop listening.

~ Sone crazy lady set a world record for number of bridesmaids with 168. I don't even know 168 people.  And seriously how much extra time was added to that wedding with just women walking down the aisle?

Trivia Saturday

~ Today was the last Semi-Finals as a Trivia team of the Greene Turtle - since, they're closing next week.  Unfortunately, that didn't make us play any better.  For comparison, last semi-finals we ended in 9th place.  This semi-finals we were about 20th...It was a bad day for us egg-heads.

~ When the first question is something ridiculous like what numbers are on what side of the dice, you know it's going to be a long game.

~ We finally got a New York Question and a Friends question!  And yet, they were both something that everyone else would know too.  Not fair!

~ I work with a bunch of computer people.  I hear stuff I don't understand or remember every day.  However, the term "killer app" was an answer today and I can honestly say I've never, ever heard it before, nor do I understand exactly what the heck it is.

~ A ridiculous half time question on soundtracks where you had to name 3 things for every answer, seemed fairly useless.  But yay for us, we're great at useless!  We got 29 out of the possible 30 points.  Always a plus.

~ Of course, after getting the 29 points it would have helped to get a whole section correct instead of losing 21 points...

~ Like I said, it was not a great day for Team Buy Me a Drink First.  But now we're off on to a new adventure - Team Traveling Trivia.  We're going to see if we can find a new home that's even half as cool as our old one.  Wish us luck!

Trivia Tuesday

~ Team Buy Me A Drink First are total creatures of habit.  When the normal Trivia dude goes on vacation and we get a new person calling the questions, and that new person doesn't project the questions on the screen, asks some questions all at the same time, can't read the questions well, and generally takes FOREVER to finish the game, we get very, very annoyed! All of that being said, we couldn't leave because tonight was the last night for trivia at this bar.  It's apparently shutting down next week and we're very sad about that!  We plan to live a nomadic lifestyle over the next few weeks in our hopes to find a bar and a trivia dude that we like as much as the ones we're losing.

~ Shots that look like cereal milk and taste like chewing on a cinnamon stick are truly disgusting!

~ It is nearly impossible to remember 3 categories when the trivia dude says them only once.  What's even harder to do is to figure out whether or not you got points for a particular round when the guy giving the points just forgets to tell you...

~ A kumquat looks like a small orange - I feel way too many fruits look like small oranges, including small oranges. (Also, something else I just learned, orange is a very hard word to type...)

~ Whenever you think an answer to a question on College Hoops is going to be Duke, you'll be wrong.  Always go with some other team.  I'm pretty sure we've answered Duke for every College Hoops question and never answered correctly.

~ John Dunn wrote a poem about a flea.  Don't you think there are about a million better insects to write about?  I'm sure flea was easy to rhyme with things, but romantic-sounding it's not.

~ 1000 Kilograms is also known as a MegaGram or a Metric Ton.  I think Megagram sounds like some Transformers villain, so much that I would have thought that I had heard that before.

~ Johnny B. Goode - a song I've heard about almost incessantly since Chuck Berry died last week - only made it to number 80 on the Billboard Top 100 list.  This is a song that went to the moon.  Shouldn't we have sent a song that was #1?

~ The most productive tomato plant in the world yielded 1154 pounds of tomatoes in one year.  If I had that plant, it would cover me for a summer! : )

Trivia Tuesday

~ While all the men on our team seemed to side with tomorrow's Day without Women, it was the ladies that disagreed on whether or not it was a good idea.  Apparently it's a hot button issue.  However, those women are all teachers, and therefore work with many other women and are paid on a scale that equals them to men's salaries.  I on the other hand are surrounded by men each day that like to talk about how much more they make than me, so I have a little different viewpoint on the whole thing...A rousing conversation was had by all.

~ Kim Kardashian has been married 3 times.  I was pretty sure Kanye was the only, but keeping up with the Kardashians has never really been my cup of tea.  (See what I did there? : )

~ West Point is known as the Fort Knox of Silver.  Wouldn't you assume then that Army uniforms had more silver medals on them instead of the gold?

~ Movie quotes will be added to the list of "Things we Know Nothing About."  Just one week, I'd like them to include Broadway quotes instead of movies.  Now that I could handle!

~ Rita Repulsa is the name of a bad guy on the Power Rangers.  I feel like that is by far the worst bad guy name ever!  You could say I'm repulsed by it... ; )

~ Tommy Lee Jones and Al Gore were roomates in college.  Why did we never know that?  That is by far the strangest pairing to imagine.  I'd really enjoy a sitcom version of their living situation.  It totally has potential!

~ Getting your usual chicken tenders in a cone - without french fries - just throws the whole evening off.  And apparently transferring the chicken tenders into the basket of the newly acquired french fries is "too much trouble" and the very definition of "First World Problems."

~ This evening our table was so far from the question asker we briefly brainstormed ways to make it easier to get the answers to him - Drone?  Text? This - in case you were wondering - is part B in the definition of First World Problems.

~ However, it turns out that long distances and missing French Fries must be the key to winning because we made it to second place overall and will be attending the semi-finals again!  Yay us!

Trivia Tuesday

~ Even if your numbered guess is ridiculously out of the ball park (about 3 million out of the ball park...) adding "and 4" to the end of the guess somehow makes it a funnier guess and will most likely make more people agree with you.  You'll still be wrong, but at least you'll be laughing.

~ Folgers is apparently the best selling coffee in the United States which, as we learned this evening, enrages the Dunkin Donuts coffee lovers.

~ Fracas is a "hard" word to spell according to the question askers.  I'm not sure how anyone would go about spelling that particular word any differently.  However, quarrel - which was the word used in the definition of fracas is a bit more difficult, seeing as I could have sworn there was another L in there somewhere.

~ According to some stat firm, it takes most men 120 sweeps of a 3 blade razor to get completely clean shaven.  I would like to know - as well as everyone else in the bar - just how hairy you have to be to require 120 sweeps of a razor?

~ Mae West was an original blonde bombshell in the movie Every Day's a Holiday.  There's a chance I knew this because it was in one of the Susan Branch illustrations in her book.  There's also a chance that I'm imagining that.  One can never be sure.  At any rate, no one believed me anyway and we didn't wager any points so I suppose there's that.

~ Gepetto is Pinocchio's father.  My team mates think it's less weird that I've never seen Pinocchio than the fact that I've never seen Peter Pan.

~ The only upside to having restless leg syndrome is that sometimes it's the answer to a trivia question.

~ Somehow our team is very, very good at answering questions about Heath Ledger.  For a team that could only name 5 of his movies after a few minutes, those 5 managed to be the answer.  It was almost spooky.

~ Playing one Elton John song after you've just asked a question about another Elton John song is just playing dirty.  Do you have any idea how difficult it is to remember the lyrics to Tiny Dancer while Candle in the Wind is playing?
