Linked-Out

I was a late adopter to the whole social media thing.  I wanted nothing to do with Facebook but was pushed into it by a friend.  And I just recently (in the last 6 months or so) got into the Twitter rage.  I still don't post anything, but twitter stalking is one of my favorite activities.  I'm now willing to admit that it has a place in today's world.  I get more news from Facebook and Twitter (which I know is a terrible thing to admit) than I do from the newspaper.  And social media is a great way to keep up with old friends and new.

But while I'm willing to admit that Facebook and Twitter are helpful, and enjoyable, I still cannot profess the same love for Linked-In.  I haven't the foggiest idea as to how I managed to get a profile.  Apparently I've had it for a while.  It has my picture and my resume, so I must have attempted to use it at one time.  But I have no recollection of doing so.  Today I opened it for the first time in apparently a year and a half.  I had 6 emails - only one of which was actually helpful (I feel slightly bad about missing that one), and like 55 connections.  What does that even mean?

I know that Linked-In is supposed to be about social networking in business. And it might have a place in that world, but really isn't Facebook more useful for those kinds of connections?  Linked-In manages to get coworkers to "endorse" for certain activities, which is all well and good but all that's needed to do so is to clicking a few check-marks.  So does that really mean anything in the long run?  And you can search jobs on the site, but you can also do that on Monster and Google just as easily.

Basically it's an empty hole where profiles go to die, but that's just my opinion.  It may be helpful to some, but I think if they were a little less annoying with their daily emails and requests to invite your contacts, they may get a few more people to actually update their profiles more than once every 2 years.  Just a thought...
