As a big fan of food in general, one of the very first things I search for when I'm traveling somewhere, is the food. I look for specialties, like malasadas in Hawaii (still on my list of to try items!), or tea in Britain. I look for little hole in the wall restaurants to try. And most importantly, I look for items that I just have to have. Most of the time, these are sweets and desserts. What can I say? I'm predictable.
So as I was searching for all the latest and greatest restaurants this evening for my England trip, I noticed something I've never noticed before. I'm not sure why. It might have something to do with the fact that, as someone without kids, I've never had to worry about it. Here's the thing. The Kid's menu in England, is vastly different than the ones in the States.
I guess it's just something I never thought of before. When you think of kids meals here, you think of chicken tenders or hamburgers. French Fries or spaghetti. They've been trying to improve them, but kids meals are basically something bad for them. However in England, kids seem to be eating pretty much the same deliciousness their parents are eating. I saw a menu tonight that included Tagliatelle with Pesto, Mini shepherd's Pie, Roast Beef or Pork (only on Sundays) & Kelmscott Sausage, mashed potatoes and gravy.
How fantastic is that?! I'm sure that not all kids meals here are terrible and I'm sure that not all kids meals there are fantastic, but it's cool to see. When I was little I always ate exactly what the grown ups ate. And I'm happy I did. Seeing the pickiness of some of my previous students, I wish that was the case these days.
Just another reason to love my England!
