I gush, A LOT, about London. There are about a million reasons to love it. The food, the attractions, the history, the people...need I continue? But I think at the very top of the list is their devotion to arts and literature. It may sound odd, but the Brits really seem to celebrate authors and creatives just a bit more than we do here.
Whereas, football players and celebrities are at the top of the food chain here in the States, writers seem to be revered a bit more. Don't get me wrong, England has their fair share of celebrities and sports stars too, but I don't recall any statues being built here in honor of Thoreau or Poe lately.
So this week, due to their fondness for all things lit, the first of the Paddington Trail statues went up throughout London. A few famous faces like Hugh Bonneville, Benedict Cumberbatch, & Stephen Fry crafted new designs for the bear from Darkest Peru. Fifty of these statues will be unveiled all around town. I gotta say, I'm fairly partial to Shakesbear myself, though the others are pretty darn cute as well! What a great way to celebrate a classic children's book character! And yet another reason to LOVE London!
Last statue that went up here was in honor of Ray Lewis...somehow it's just not the same...
