Almost immediately after the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices this morning in Paris, support came pouring in from countries all over the world. The vicious attack on employees of the paper, as well as freedom of speech and expression, was heartbreaking to see. In the end 12 people lost their lives and the gunmen still haven't been captured. To believe a cartoon could propel someone to so much bloodshed is almost unthinkable.
If anything can come out of this cowardly act, it's this. Cartoonists and artists all over the world are expressing their thoughts and feelings using the same medium the gunmen were so adamantly against. The voices of those that died are still being heard in the artwork and satire of their colleagues and friends.
To lose so many talented and loved people in one hateful act of violence is a tragedy, but knowing their work lives on and knowing that their voices aren't silenced, even in death, is a small comfort to their loved ones.
